GMAT Prep - Time and Distance Problem

by akay » Fri Aug 10, 2007 5:16 am
Can somebody help me with this problem. I'd like to know how to use the formula RT=D in this case. Thanks

In the first hour of a two-hour trip, a car traveled d kilometers, and in the second hour of the trip, the car traveled one-half that distance. What is the average rate at which the car traveled during the trip, in kilometers per hour?

(A) d
(B) 1/3d
(C) 1/2d
(D) 3/4d
(E) 3/2d

For average speed, the formula is always total distance/total time.

so total distance is d + d/2 = 3d/2
total time is 2 hr

ans is 3d/4

Let, Car travelled (d=)2 km in first hour
i.e. Car travelled (1/2)*2=1 km in Second hour

Total Distance Travelled = 2+1 = 3
Total Time = 2 Hours

Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time = 3/2 --------[for d=2]
