To be aware of/ that

Although many Whites, noting the presence of some Blacks in the middle class, think that the time for enforcing civil rights measures is past. Blacks generally are aware that the figures for average income and unemployment show as wide of a radical discrepancy as ever.

A.
B. that average-income and unemployment figures show as wide
C. that the average-income unemployment figures are showing as wide of
D. of average-income and unemployment figures that show as wide of
E. of figures for average income and umemployment showing as wide

I was confused between B and E. What is the difference between average-income and average income? And when to use a "dash" ?
OA: B
i dont know about that hash... but i believe that B is preffered to E because there are a couple of flaws in E...

1. use of showing... tense error...
2. average income and employment figures is better than the figures for ....

When you modify nouns with other nouns that are themselves modified, technically you're supposed to hyphenate the modifying thing to make it into an adjective (like "million-dollar price tag" or "mixed-gender teams"). This doesn't happen in practice all the time. "Average-income", then, is an adjective modifying "figure." In Choice E, "average income" is just a noun phrase.
