According your answer, I see why E is incorrect. But, I don't understand why option C is wrong.

What's the difference between including and range from A to B? Or it's just a red herring.
Whether ranging will modify the subject of sentence? Thanks.

COMMA + including implies that the FOLLOWING noun is an example.
COMMA + for example implies that the PRECEDING NOUN noun is an example.
A and B: art works, including paintings, for example
Here, the usages in red are redundant, since both imply that paintings = examples of Michelangelo's art works.
Eliminate A and B.

C: including...sculpture, as the Statue of David
Here, the intention is to indicate that the Statue of David is an example of sculpture created by Michelangelo.
To convey this meaning, the inclusion of such is required:
including...sculpture, such as the Statue of David
Eliminate C.

E: ranging from paintings...and sculpture
Here, the usage of and is unidiomatic.
Correct: ranging from x TO y.
