Simple but Good question...

Do you understand why the use of HIM is INCORRECT and HIS is CORRECT...

Wel, in this question HIM has no antecedent...the subject is symphony not shostakovich's..its a possessive and to refer it possessive pronoun HIS is required.

About Op E, HIMSELF is a reflexive pronoun

A reflexive pronoun indicates that the action of the DOER return to itself..for example

He burnt himself.

Here since the subject is as i mentioned symphony not shostakovich's, so u can relate it with the above example....Himself cannot be used for symphony...

I hope this help

Him is incorrect not because HIM has no antecedent.Infact, composer is the antecedent of Him.
But we require His in this sentence because the sentence's meaning conveys that something had happened and that something caused composer's(his) having the piece performance impossible.

This is a good way to put it. It was not the composer who was impossible, but the having.
