Profile Evalutaion

by asugrad » Tue Jun 24, 2008 10:14 pm
Caucasian,Male,25
Undergrad: Arizona State, Economics
GPA: 3.3
Note: A's in my quant classes (statistics, forecasting)
GMAT: Taking in a month, scoring 720-750 in practice test

Regarding my education- I started out taking college courses in 10th grade at a local community college where I continued after graduating high school a year early. Attended there for a year after high school. Then transfered to ASU. Should I report both GPA's individually or combine the two?

Work Experience:

Financial Advisor- Merrill Lynch. Will have been there two years come Fall 09

People don't get "promoted" within wealth management business, but I am currently 1st quintile within my peer group in all the statistics Merrill looks at.

Currently hold Series 7,66, and insurance licenses

Other experiences:

Worked full time during college, while being the sole provider for my wife and child. Also finished my last 3 years of college in 1.5 years.(Not sure if this would be appropriate but it explains why my grades could be higher)

Worked for an independent insurance marketing company, focused on Medicare products. Helped open new markets in Pennsylvania and Arizona.

Spent two years between my sophomore and junior year of college as a missionary for my church in Belgium and the Netherlands. Learned to speak Dutch and Flemish (Essentially the same language but recognized as distinct nonetheless) I am not sure how to portray this missionary experience? How might this be viewed? Community Projects while there include: taught English and Dutch classes to local immigrants. My mission experience is not a cohesive volunteer effort, rather a mix of unique experiences that benefited others. Example: I helped a family who had fled from Iran, keep from being sent home. After using my Rotary conatcts I went to the local chamber and was able to gather signatures from prominent community members on their behalf. Which led the their request for asylum being granted.

Aside from the missionary activities I was involved in the leadership of the area. I was responsible for all of the missionaries and missionary work for the Northern half of the Netherlands. I worked with local leaders in developing plans for the missionary work and then helped to implement them.

I know that is a lot, but I am unsure of how this is viewed in the eyes of admission committees and would love some advice on how to present that.

Currently involved with local church, working with young adults. Organize and plan social activities on their behalf as well as provide theological instruction to them.

Work every year through Rotary with the Salvation Army organizing Bell Ringers during the holidays.

I am assuming a major question will be why now with regards to the MBA.
I see myself moving more into a consulting role, working internationally. I want to continue with asset management but more on a consulting basis working with international institutional investors. An MBA will help me refine the management and analytical skills required for this type of work.

I would like to attend a top university on the east coast, but have even thought about going international: London School of Business, INSEAD.
Some of the schools I have looked at are: Wharton, Chicago, Kellogg, NYU Stern, Columbia,Tuck.

Will I have a chance at any school like that and if not what could I do to increase my odds?

Dear asugrad,

It is best to keep the GPAs separate as you will want them to match your transcripts. You will want to disclose your shortened college career and employment if your cumulative GPA is below a 3.0-3.2.

As for your missionary work, you will want to have it on your resume to show what you did during that time as opposed to leaving a gap between the two schools. I would suggest listing it under either experience or in an other section as you have some leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills you can highlight. Perhaps there are also some interesting projects or experiences that you can use in your essays? Aside from that, you don't need to do (or not do) anything special with regards to the missionary work.

Yes, you will be asked why you want your MBA and why now. You seem to have well-thought out goals and a rationale for pursuing the degree. Whether or not the schools you mention are within reach for you will greatly depend on your GMAT score. From what you posted, you have the foundation for a competitive application in terms of work experience, leadership, and rationale. Do your best on the GMAT and put in lots of effort on your applications--you'll be fine.

Best of luck,
Lisa
