RED-CARS

by poonam197 » Thu Dec 18, 2008 7:16 am
Premiums for automobile accident insurance are often higher for red cars than for cars of other colors. To justify these higher charges, insurance companies claim that, overall, a greater percentage of red cars are
involved in accidents than are cars of any other color. If this claim is true, then lives could undoubtedly be saved by banning red cars from the roads altogether. The reasoning in the argument is flawed because
the argument

(A) accepts without question that insurance companies have the right to charge higher premiums for higher-risk clients
(B) fails to consider whether red cars cost the same to repair as cars of other colors
(C) ignores the possibility that drivers who drive recklessly have a preference for red cars
(D) does not specify precisely what percentage of red cars are involved in accidents
(E) makes an unsupported assumption that every automobile accident results in some loss of life

The Correct Ans is Option C.

Even Option 'D' fits well.. Could someone explain why not 'D'

Thanks !

Premiums for accident insurance is high for red than other ??
but y !! wat difference does the color make ?
can other color meet less accident
or red is more ??

red car meet with more accident.... may be lotta more people buy red car ....

but color alone can not reduce he accident

this argument sis seriously flawed

First round

a red car = higher rsiks!! its not way mentioned ! and this dont make sense wrong
b--of course it cost the same ----- red car and blue car .... parts is the same ....
c--could be true
d percentage of red cars ! argument say all the red cars.... so its irrelevant
e----- no mention of loss of life at all .. premiums is talking abt accident premium and not life insurance wrong

I realized there is not second round of elimination

C is the take ( i wish OA was posted after some discussion )

a greater percentage of red cars are involved in accidents than are cars of any other color

The statement is bringing statistics... If one were to prove that the total number of red-cars are far lesser in number than other cars... Then this is flaw too... Hence option 'D'

nooo! it say wat percentage of red cars !!

sooo we looking at 100 cars !!

assume 20 red cars and rest other colors !!

soo wat precentage of red cars !! soo 10 cras meet with accident !! so it is effectively !! 50 percentage of red cars meet with accident !! sooo ... wat abt other cars?? is this enuf to prove the arguemnt is flawed??

conclusion:
If this claim is true, then lives could undoubtedly be saved by banning red cars from the roads altogether

i.e banning red cars=>>lives would be saved.

Here the flawed assumption is

Every red car that meets with an accident =>> loss of life of the driver

But it can be other way round too..

Rash drivers prefer red cars.

Thus rash drivers who prefer red cars=>>loss of life

C says exactly this.

D could have been the contender...if question stimulus would have mentioned Higher no. of cars rather than there percentages....

eg Red car 500

Blue car 400

but total red car 50000
total blue car 1000

flaw case

but in this question:

Red car 90%
blue car 40%

so anyways the proportion is high

C seems to be the best choice here
