Columnist: Geoorge Orwell's book 1984 has exercised much influence on a great number of this
newspaper readers. One thousand readers were surveyed and asked to name the one book that
had the most influence on their lives. The book chosen more often was the Bible; !984 was second

The answer to which of the following questions would most help in evaluating the columnist's argument?

1) How many books had each person surveyed read?
2) How many people chose books other than 1984?
3) How many people read the columnist's newspaper?
4) How many books by George Orwell other than 1984 were chosen?
5) How many of those surveyed had actually read the books they choose?

Well, out of 1000 if 989 selected Bible, 6 selected 1984 and 5 selected book X, then the influence of 1984 was not as great as the argument claimed (though it was ranked #2).
