hi all,

i have been studying gmat for quite some time and with out any great results. i have not yet crossed 600 mark in GMAT tests. i have taken some tests from princeton review as i have taken coaching classes from them for 3 months from april to june 2011 and as a part of it i have got access to four tests.

scores as below. all the four testes are taken in 2011

1 st test : 300
2nd test 410
3rd test : 430
4th test : 390

the next test i tool MGMAT first free mock test and got : 560 on (jan 1st 2012) . this gave me a good boost.

next one i took knewton free gmat test and got :470 (15-jan - 2012)

after the disastrous performance i have not taken any other test till date. i have bought mgmat maths and verbal foundation books. i have OG 12 and 10 th editions.

in quants and verbal, every question of say 580+ level is complete bonks/ boomer to me. i am just unable to solve. in verbal i am able to boil down to two questions and i am always ticking the incorrect one ...maths is complete nightmare..

.i am able to dedicate time every day of 3 hrs after comming from office in the evening and morning for 1 hr before i leave to office. on weekends i have two full days to work upon.

i have scheduled my CAT in march end 2012( i have already postponed it once from feb 2012) . please assist me in an approach so that i can reach 680 atleast. i am ready to take gmat second time, but at least for the first attempt i want to see some decent score on the screen. if you have any material(as many as possible) please give the links for the same or let me know from where can i buy it.

please assist as of now i am following few of the best instructors from this web site and when ever they are all solving problems i am getting them in the email and i am redoing those problems. also i am extensively using grockit.com for practice.

on Feb 20th i am planning to another CAT from grockit.com. keeping my fingers terrible crossed.
god knows what is going to happen on the D day...

regards
eshwar

First of all you should take other test prep companies mocks with a grain of salt as they are not very good indicators compared to GMATprep mocks. You can take each GMATPrep mock twice to know your score and anything more than twice will give you inflated scores as you will be seeing repetitions. So first thing is to start off with GMATPrep mock and post your scores so that people here can guide you. Everyone uses different test prep company but everybody will be using GMATPrep mocks and will know how to guide you based on that. Moreover post your individual scores and which topics/sections are your strengths and weaknesses.

Lot of people here have started with a similar score as yours and have gone upto 700s. So don't get demotivated, even if you think that after 3 months of preparation you aren't improving then you should be looking out for where you are going wrong in your preparation. Try changing your approach. MGMAT books are quite good for both quant and verbal.

For Quant get comfortable with OG problems. Start with solving 10 or 20 problems a day and you should be reviewing them for almost double the time you take to solve the problems. Use errorlog, make notes, shortcuts, flashcards and everyday before starting to solve the problems review the log, notes, flashcards etc. Read through the MGMAT guides and take notes as well. Once you have solved all the OG problems redo the wrong ones and make sure you don't repeat the mistakes.

For Verbal, use POE. Instead of finding the right answer, always try to eliminate the wrong ones. Get to know the patterns and take notes of it. For CR, if you don't know to identify the question type then go through MGMAT CR or powerscore both are good. For SC, MGMAT SC is the bible. For RC,you have to practice and nothing other that with the right strategy. Practicing for RC is to identify the right strategy and to find patterns. If you find your accuracy low then change your strategy for RC, don't try to practice and hope that accuracy will improve. The key is to find your own strategy which gives you best results.

Take one mock a week and plan to improve your one or more weak topics to improve within that week and go on with the next mock to see improvement. See beatthegmat top stories for inspiration and don't get demotivated, it is just an exam and not everything depends on this one exam alone. Keep us updated :) Hope this helps !!

Thanks that was a wonderful insight...

will take GMAT prep and let you know the scores.. i was always of the opinion that gmat prep should be taken once u have completed all ur exams and just one week before the main CAT. the biggest motivating factor was that, when you have mentioned to take the test prep companies exams with a grain of salt...meaning probably my score could be inflated a bit more than what it actually is...

i just wanted to know, if manhattan books are soo good, do they have any books that give the practice questions that are 500- 7o0 level?.
ifeel their 8 strategy books are just introductions and advanced maths and verbal are of the other end of the spectrum...but nothing in between...

MGMAT materials don't have practice problems in GMAT style, the problems given in the study material are only to show you how the concepts can be applied or approached in a simple manner. But MGMAT tests are great. You can take them more than once. They give us 6 practice tests and each test questions are unique the first time you take it. The OG problems themselves are of 500 - 700 level. You would be solving 700 questions in each quant and verbal, its more than enough to learn a lot from them.

hey ...

i just took the gmat power prep today... i got 450/ 800..

verbal - 27
quants - 26

I QUIT... this gmat is not happening ... in the past one year i have been wasting my time in preparing for the exams on weekends and weekdays....without going out and sitting and practicing at home..

i todays test i got the first 9 questions incorrect in and the 10 th question i got an addition problem with the GMAT ALGORITHM MOCKING AT ME ALL THE WAY.

there has been no proper method of study...just simple buys books and accumulate them.. do practice but when i sit on the exam its all goes down... i did a lot of research on b schools but i think if the first step itself i am flunking then why thinking about winning the race??

i have lots of practice material which i will upload so that i might be useful for any other aspirant who deserves a better score and a place in b school. almost every b- school wants a min score of 600 which i have nt been able to cross till now in the past 1 year of practice . i am hovering around 400 - 550....

last time i took the exam on 15-jan-2012 i got 470 and this time its even more worse...there has been NO VALUE ADDITION in the past one and half month !! inspite of me doing practice day in day out.. volume is not of importance in GMAT, only VALUE counts !!!

i am unable to learn from my mistakes... i dont how ppl just cross 700 with just 4 months of practice...

any ways thanks a lot for ur suggesstions... any idea on how GRE will be ? will b schools accept GRE ? i am thinking of taking that exam...as this is just not happening...

if GRE also does not click then its ok,...god has other plans for me ...be happy with what is there...

thanks

Eshwar,

Don't QUIT yet! I've read a lot of "Beat the GMAT" stories where people have struggled to achieve their dream scores. You say that you are unable to find your mistakes. So, try spending some time with experts on this forum or outside. After a year long preparation, may be you are very close to where you want to be.

Even if you were to try GRE or any other exam, you will have to put efforts to succeed. If you could put the same effort once again for GMAT with a better strategy, you might really get what you want. With persistence, you will get there soon.
