dire need to develop a new strategy

by vikram4689 » Sat May 01, 2010 6:53 pm
hi guys,

I have given 2 practice tests and was beaten by them

Crack-Gmat Diagnostic Test : 595 (Q45,V20)
Gmat Prep Test 1 : 610 (Q49,V25)

Though Quant section is fine for me , i want to get similar score in VERBAL as well. I gave tried Manhattan SC guide but could not improve my score. I also did Sahil's notes but was not able to apply them in test. For CR i have read Powerscore but could not improve my score. Since im struggling in Verbal section i decided to tackle each of the subsection of Verbal one by one, i decided to start with SC and reviewed Manhattan SC before giving "Gmat Prep Test 1" but as you can see all effort was in vain. I want to know how should i proceed , i have only 45 days and want to score around 750 . I know a similar score, like that of quant, in verbal will do it but do not now how to raise my VERBAL score

Your best bet is going to be to focus on each question type that is giving you trouble. If you can focus on the specific question types and isolate the underlying logic that is preventing you from answering that question type correctly, this will position you to make great gains.

HI,

actually i am not sure which are my weak areas, every time i get frustrated i read MGMAT SC again and try the Ques. from OG, sometimes i get the same ques right and sometimes wrong.

This is case with all three SC,RC,CR but now i have decided to work on them ONE by ONE. Is it right

Here's the thing... reading through the guides won't do you any good. Understanding the guides will be the most beneficial. I just recently learned this myself, even though I have been studying for 4 months and my exam is saturday! What it took for me to get to that point was doing poorly on my exams, but realizing that I do know the information being tested. I then took a step back before my last practice exam and got 12 out of 14 SC questions correct.

I think there are two hurdles to understanding Verbal. The first hurdle is getting back into using the terminology ie. past participles, prepositional phrases, noun modifiers, etc etc... I truly believe that it's impossible to understand the underlying topics being tested until you're comfortable with all of the vocabulary in these books. Think about it... you can't really understand the explanations if you don't understand these words. After you are comfortable with the explanations of your mistakes from all sources, then... take a break... a couple days... this will allow you to clear your head.

After the break... when you begin to tackle the questions again, you'll be able to apply the knowledge. At least that's what I found worked for me. I still haven't seen the increase in my verbal score that I would like to see, but I know that I have it in me. Verbal is like the Matrix. Once you can see past the black screen with vertically scrolling characters, you'll be stuck on the other side. Meaning, once verbal "clicks" for you... I don't think you'll go backwards.

I think you know that this is beginning to happen when you are reading something in your everyday life and you start correcting things. I'm constantly analyzing work emails and correcting them in my head.

Just my thoughts
