Boreal Owls

by ssgmatter » Fri May 21, 2010 9:58 pm
Boreal owls range over a much larger area than do other owls of similar size. The reason for this behavior is probably that the small mammals on which owls feed are especially scarce in the forests where boreal owls live, and the relative scarcity of prey requires the owls to range more extensively to find sufficient food.
Which of the following, if true, most helps to confirm the explanation above?

A. Some boreal owls range over an area eight times larger than the area over which
any other owl of similar size ranges.
B. Boreal owls range over larger areas in regions where food of the sort eaten by small mammals is sparse than they do in regions where such food is abundant.
C. After their young hatch, boreal owls must hunt more often than before in order to feed both themselves and their newly hatched young.
D. Sometimes individual boreal owls hunt near a single location for many weeks at a time and do not range farther than a few hundred yards.
E. The boreal owl requires less food, relative to its weight, than is required by members of other owl species.

I got this one correct by POE....becuase all other options except B makes no sense and does not impact the argument as such.

However, I am not able to understand the meaning of B...The language is too convoluted here......Little confused....Please help me understand the meaning of the Option B here....

Thanks!

Now that Boreal owls are covering a larger area compared to its peers. Why so?? Its not becox they eat "more food".

Its becox, Boreal owls feed upon small mammals which are scattered across the regions . Why small mammals are scattered across? Becox those small mammals eat food of the sort that are scantily available in one single location.

So Now we can understand that , since becox small mammals are widely scattered in a larger area cover, this forces the Borreeal owl to rane over larger area for "sufficient" food.

keyword to look for is " sufficient" food.

Now u can think in a oppposite way, what if all the small mammals are grouped together in a single spot, then it makes no sense for Boreal owl to cover larger area for that " sufficient " food.

SO that makes B to support the situation stated.

C wont be a strengthener, becox it doesnt convey the requirement of covering larger area by boreal owls.

Makes sense!

Can you explain only option B in your words?....

lol... interesting! how can you colect B the correct answer while you dont understand it because you just only could choose the right answer for this argument if you understood the answer and the argument, at least in this case.
well, the argument states that Boreal owls go father the place they live to find food because the food in its place is scarce
not enough for them.
B says "Boreal owls range over larger areas in regions where food of the sort eaten by small mammals is sparse than they do in regions where such food is abundant."
it means that Boreal owls just go futher/ enlarge their area to find for food when the preys they often eat in that area is not enough for them to eat to survive and when the food in that area is abundant ( means a lot) they dont have to go further/enlarge/ range more area for food.
it does confirm what the explanation in the argument. in fact it just resaid what the argument stated. so B is correct.
did i help?

concludes: Boreal owls range over a much larger area than do other owls of similar size
then the reason for this conclusion is given

option B says that in ares where food is scarce boreal owls range over large areas. if food is abundant then they do not range so far
