The border crossing proved more unpleasant than the two American reporters had expected, having their cameras seized and their tape recorders smashed by belligerent soldiers.
A.
B. expected, their cameras being seized
C. expected: their cameras were seized
D. expected; when their cameras were seized
E. expected and so their cameras had been seized
[spoiler]Source : Kaplan SAT 2010 Pages 74 Q.48. OA : C
OA explanation: The second half of the sentence is an explanation of the first half, and a colon best express this logical connection. A,B, and D all introduce sentence fragment, and E uses the wrong verb tense and incorrectly presents the camera seizure as a consequence (not an explanation ) of the first half of the sentence.
IMO: A. C breaks the parallel. I think "were" need to be added between "recorders" and "smashed"
.... expected: their cameras were seized and their tape recorders were smashed by belligerent soldiers.

Any one help explain, please.
