All,

A bit of a background about me. Indian M, 30 years old, seven years of work experience, out of which four years in Tier I Investment Banking, with main focus on Semi-conductors and Solar, based out of London. Left banking to join a Solar energy start-up in India, been here for last two and a half years helping them scale up the business. Currently, among the top solar players in the country.

Love renewable energy and plan to stick to it, but need MBA from Top US schools to take me to the next level in my career.

My work is extremely hectic, to say the least. Took almost two years to decide that I do need a MBA from Top US schools, but started preparing for GMAT only two-three months back, collecting resources from friends/family who had given it before.

My study material was : -

1)OG 11 and OG 12
2)Official supplement for Verbal and Quant
3)MG SC
4)1000 SC
5)Extra 400 questions from GMAC website

After preparing for GMAT for over last 2-3 months, with loads of work related travelling in between, I decided on Oct 1st that I need to take the test on Oct 15th, which was yesterday. In total, I took two days off work to prepare for the exam. But I really did slog in late evenings, while I was half asleep.

I am very ashamed to share that I got to know about BTG website and this awesome community on Oct 13th, while I was trying to find some SC solutions online. I did NOT take Kaplan, MGMAT or any other mock exams. I just gave GMAT Prep mocks on Oct 4th (GMATPrep I- 710- Q50, V35), Oct 7th (GMATPrep II- 720- Q50, V38), and Oct 14th (GMAT PrepII- 750- Q51, V40). I did give some section tests (4-5, I think) from offical GMATPrep old pencil and paper exams from mid 90's.

As you can see, my Q scores have been pretty consistent but V scores have been quite the opposite. I clearly get the feeling that my fundamentals in grammer are just not good enough. My CR practice left a lot to be desired. I had to read RCs multiple no of times in the exam to absorb the meaning. Overall, I think I was worst in SC, followed by RC, and lastly by CR. I come from a background where I learnt alphabets of English in class VI, in a government school. I have picked up english speaking and writing ability on the way, but have no idea about meanings of words like sub-junctives, relative pronouns, infinitives et all. They are just words to me, with no meaning at all.

As you can see, a complete ignorance about the ways to prep for the exam, weak understanding of grammer, and not enough practice in CR and RC has led me to this difficult position. I don't think I stand a chance for top US schools if I don't score more than 720-730. I am willing to put in required hard work to get me there, but don't know which way to take.

I need to get the required score by end Nov, in order to make it for R2 by late december. Clearly, there is very little time left, and there is just a lot of distance to cover before I reach my destination.

I would really appreciate if you gentle souls can give me some direction, which I could leverage upon.

Loads of wishes to you all. Hope you don't make the mistakes I made while preparing for GMAT.

Best,
GM

I think some more amount of practice in verbal will help you better your score. To improve verbal you may follow the following strategy. If you have already practiced some of the sources mentioned below you can get other practice material. If you have any other questions please let me know.

Critical Reasoning (CR)
Preparation: Critical reasoning Bible by PowerScore®, helps with all CR basics.
Practice: All GMAT® Official Guide (OG-12) questions alongside reading the Bible.
Aim: Achieve accuracy greater than 85% in all practice sets.
Sentence Correction (SC)
Preparation: Manhattan® SC 2007 edition, is an amazing book, one may call it the SC Bible as it prepares you exhaustively for SC.
Practice: Read the GMAT® Official Guide (OG-12) for SC & understand the
concepts through Answer Key. Re-do all questions, if possible. Please pay
significant attention to idioms as questions on them are tricky but relatively easy.
Modifiers also require significant attention.
Aim: Achieve accuracy greater than 85% in all practice sets.
Important Tip: Don't spend equal time on all types of SC questions. Practice all of
them initially & identify your weak areas. Focus your efforts more on these for
more robust & efficient preparation.
Reading Comprehension (RC)
Preparation: Read editorials from NY Times® or Washington Post® online or
from other newspapers on daily basis. It helps in building your reading speed. It should
be a daily exercise.
Practice: Practice from all possible sources as a lot of raw practice is required to
ace RCs. Practice at least 100 RCs before you start giving mocks.
Aim: Read easier passage in 2-3 minutes & understand the basic gist of it. If the
passage is really tough you can take up to 4 minutes. Do not rest until you
achieve accuracy > 85 % in all practice sets.
Important Tip: We also advice against jumping to questions first & then looking
for answers in the paragraph. Reading essay first makes answering "main point"
& "summary of essay" questions seem like a cakewalk.

Thanks Ivyctor. I am starting with PowerScore tonight. Hopefully, this will help.

Abhij- yeah I did finish 1000 SC, but I am afraid my approach was not quite correct.

Even if I had this book, it is not appropriate to send books like this. This is a proprietary material and if you intend to use it, please buy your personal version.
