Inference question...

by [email protected] » Tue May 22, 2012 4:07 am
Some environmentalists question the prudence of exploiting features of the environment, arguing that there are no economic benefits to be gained from forests, mountains, or wetlands that no longer exist. Many environmentalists claim that because nature has intrinsic value it would be wrong to destroy such features of the environment, even if the economic costs of doing so were outweighed by the economic costs of not doing so.

Which one of the following can be logically inferred from the passage?

A. It is economically imprudent to exploit features of the environment.

B. Some environmentalists appeal to a non-economic justification in questioning the defensibility of exploiting features of the environment.

C. Most environmentalists appeal to economic reasons in questioning the defensibility of exploiting features of the environment.

D. Many environmentalists provide only a non-economic justification in questioning the defensibility of exploiting features of the environment.

E. Even if there is no economic reason for protecting the environment, there is a sound non-economic justification for doing so.
The OA given is B.
In this option, I did not get the answer choice 'in questioning the defensibility of exploiting features of the environment' this part does not go with the stimulus given. Really difficult to get the answer out of all the options given man.

Option A: Opposite answer choice.

Option B: as claimed before

Option C: Extreme choice because of the word 'most' being used.

Option D: Again 'in questioning the defensibility of exploiting features of the environment.' the same part is harassing me.

Option E: First part of the option is not supported by the stimulus...

Please guyzzz help in understanding this question.

A is too extreme and not warranted by the content of the passage.
B is directly stated in the passage(Infact it is stated for a greater set.Hence the subset as in B is automatically true.)
C says opposite of what is stated in the passage.
D is exactly stated in the passage.
E cannot be inferred from the passage. A comparison between economic and non-economic justificatoin is not given.

- Opposite of what is inferred!

B. Some environmentalists appeal to a non-economic justification in questioning the defensibility (of some other environmentalists) of exploiting features of the environment.

C. Most environmentalists appeal to economic reasons in questioning the defensibility of exploiting features of the environment. Most and some are not same :)

D. Many environmentalists provide only a non-economic justification in questioning the defensibility of exploiting features of the environment. - Economic justification given

E. Even if there is no economic reason for protecting the environment, there is a sound non-economic justification for doing so. Sorry, No comparison available

Hope it helps :)

Amit,

in questioning the defensibility of exploiting features of the environment - This sentence means that challenging the defense of exploiting features of the environ.

B states the inference, that "Some environmentalists appeal to a non-economic justification in questioning the defensibility of exploiting features of the environment."

Which means some env....lists appeal (against) the non-economic reason of questioning / challenging the defence statement

Let me know whether this helps

Sorry could not understand the explanation given by you guyzzzz... I got up till what GMAT KISS explained i.e 'arguing that there are no economic benefits (economic justification)' i.e what is actually not regarded as non economic benefits is actually an economic justification.

Even considering that, I am not understanding as to why B is the answer choice.

Also in the second part of the stimulus, i.e 'Many environmentalists claim that because nature has intrinsic value it would be wrong to destroy such features of the environment, even if the economic costs of doing so were outweighed by the economic costs of not doing so.'

The author actually mentions 'intrinsic value' which is an economic terminology. So from that perspective also how can B be the answer choice. Calculating something's intrinsic value means actually calculating or getting out the Economic benefits or giving an economic justification.

Could any of the experts please help man...
