The extraordinary diary of William Lyon Mackenzie King, prime minister of Canada for over twenty years, revealed that this most bland and circumspect of men was a mystic and also guided in both public and private life by omens.

Is this a correct construction? If no, could you point the problem?

Could you explain usage of 'and also' - under what circumstances 'and also' is useful?

regards,
patanjali

also is redundant here . we are supposed to strike out the construction as soon as we see it on grounds of redundancy

The sentence is not correct. The second part of the subject's character is not modifying the subject. If I were to rewrite it, I would write it as follows

The extraordinary diary of William Lyon Mackenzie King, prime minister of Canada for over twenty years, revealed that this most bland and circumspect of men was a mystic and that he was guided in both public and private life by omens.

This maintains the parallelism between revealed that this... and that he
