Capitalism

by rkhicha » Mon Aug 02, 2010 8:26 am
Some analysts contend that true capitalism exists only when the ownership of both property and the means of production is regarded as an inalienable right of an individual's, and it is not a license granted by government and revokable at
whim.

(A) is regarded as an inalienable right of an individual's, and it is not
(B) are regarded as individuals' inalienable rights, and that it not be
(C) is regarded as an individual's inalienable right, not as
(D) are regarded as an individual's inalienable rights, not when they are
(E) is regarded as the inalienable rights of an individual, not when it is

3/2 split with is/are.

B is wrong and that leaves D.

What's your confusion to this question?
Yep.

OA is C.

Yes, I should have paid attention to "both".

Yes Option C is correct..

The ownership is singular...So is must be used..

Option A and E can be eliminated bcoz of usage of "it"

oops.. I completely missed this one.. I agree with OA, C is correct.

when the ownership of something is regarded as.. not as.. is the correct construction. Note that "of both property and .." is in a prep phrase, which is just a modifier of the subject "ownership".

yes the ownership ( as a whole concept ) is singular ,, So "IS " follows

Now we are left with options A ,C and E .

We must also note the use of "Regarded as " and hence the second part of the sentence
must also be some what parallel .
Hence option C
Failure is not an option

Answer should be C as ownership is singular.
Question : is the usage of both right in the sentence :
"both property and the means of production"

Does not it violate both x and y ?

C is better here.

We need 'is' and not 'are', because subject is 'the ownership'.

B and D are out.

A is out because 2 possessive forms are redundant
E is out because 'not when it is' is not ||el with anything

Left with C alone.

Keep in mind that the most important word is "both".

By removing "both" from the sentence:

"when the ownership of property and the means of production are regarded as an inalienable right of an individual's, and it is not"

The verb then should be plural "are".

The key here isn't "ownership of..." but rather the keyword "both" symbolizes that there should be two elements following it.
Yep.

Why E is wrong?

Only when X is regarded as ....................not when IT is a license given by

X and IT are parallel.

Answer should be C

B and D can be ruled out. Correct usage is ownership is.

C is more proper because it uses correct form of parralelism

You should also look at the later part of the sentence which says "a license granted", which makes the singularity clear.
