According to the professor’s philosophy, the antidote to envy is one’s own work, always one’s own work: not thinking about it, not assessing it, but simply doing it.
(A) one’s own work, always one’s own work: not thinking about it, not assessing it, but simply doing it (CORRECT)
(B) always work; because you don’t think about it or assess it, you just do it (AKWARD,Changes meaning and many more problems)
(C) always one’s own work: not thinking about or assessing it, but simply to do it (NOT PARALLEL)
(D) not to think or assess, but doing one’s own work (NOT PARALLEL,MEANING CHANGED)
(E) neither to think about one’s own work nor to assess it, it is always simply doing it (NOT PARALLEL)

According to United States Air Force officials, a cannon shooting dead chickens at airplanes has proved helpful to demonstrate what kind of damage can result when jets fly into a flock of large birds.
(A) shooting dead chickens at airplanes has proved helpful to demonstrate
(B) shooting dead chickens at airplanes has proved itself helpful as a demonstration of
(C) shooting dead chickens at airplanes proves itself helpful as demonstrating
(D) that shoots dead chickens at airplanes proves itself helpful to demonstrate
(E) that shoots dead chickens at airplanes has proved helpful in demonstrating(CORRECT)

'That' is needed to modify cannon. So left with D&E.E is an easy pick as 'helpful in' is the correct idiom.

Acid rain and snow result from the chemical reactions between industrial emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids.
(A) with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids
(B) with atmospheric water vapor producing highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids
(C) and atmospheric water vapor which has produced highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids
(D) and atmospheric water vapor which have produced sulfuric and nitric acids which are highly corrosive
(E) and atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids

Between X and Y is the correct idiom. So eliminate A&B.C & D uses wrong tense.

Thanks !

56. Acid rain and snow result from the chemical reactions between industrial
emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides with atmospheric water vapor to
produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids.

(A) with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric
acids
(B) with atmospheric water vapor producing highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric
acids
(C) and atmospheric water vapor which has produced highly corrosive sulfuric
and nitric acids
(D) and atmospheric water vapor which have produced sulfuric and nitric acids
which are highly corrosive
(E) and atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric
acids

IMO it should be B. Between refers here the reaction between sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. And WITH behaves as a conjunction for chemical reactions with atmospheric water vapors. Doesn't it mean that reaction between X and Y WITH Z results in Acid Rain and Snow?? Please explain.

For the second question..... "According to United States Air Force officials, a cannon shooting dead chickens at airplanes has proved helpful to demonstrate what kind of damage can result when jets fly into a flock of large birds."

Doesnt putting "that" as in (D) and (E), seems to mean that it is the particular canon and in the sentence we are talking about a general canon.

I have read that 'that' is used to point out something specific.

So I say D and E are rejected, we come down to A, B or C

A:Better than the rest, hence accepted
Band C: use of 'itself' is wrong

So my take is A

Kindly correct me if wrong

I thought I read somewhere that the word "and" is used in conjunction with "between", as in "between 'a' and 'b' and 'c' and..."

If so, this would eliminate both (A) and (B). Then, I would eliminate both (C) and (D) because they use the past tense.

yes the idiom is between X and Y

The point is that in this sentence X is sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides and Y is atmospheric water vapor

I wanted inputs for question 55

As the song goes, "you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes...you might find...you get what you need".

of course...agreed...

But answers to SC problems are an absolute quantity and not a conditional one........So either we get the concept or we dont......as said in movie Antitrust "Either you are a 1 or a 0" (just an argument.....nothing intended) :P

Ayush, we're all still working on resolving this matter. We don't want to respond prematurely, and give you the incorrect answer.

@ Ayush

It says that "a canon shooting dead chicken at airplanes" which means "a canon which shoots dead chicken at airplanes " so it justifies use of "that " here .And u r right even in pointing out that is used to point out something specific .

Please correct me if i m wrong !!! (as even i m in process of learning )
