Usage of like and including
movie set designs - also include that of 1942 film
i.e design for 1942 film " reap the wild wind" was one among the many movie set designs
I have a gap in understanding for like and including.
Can anyone help me?

1. In this particular case, the use of LIKE would create an illogical meaning. Look, for example, at option C: his movie set designs, like those for the 1942 film ... This means that HIS ... DESIGNS are being compared with THOSE FOR a certain film: the implication is that William Pereira did not create those designed for that film. When one thing is compared with another, it does not include that other thing. The intention of the sentence is not to establish such an exclusion: just the contrary.

2. This is why you would have to choose an option with INCLUDING. The only one that has both the required plural pronoun THOSE in reference to DESIGNS and the required Future Simple WILL REMEMBER is option E, so this is the correct answer.

3. Speaking more generally, the difference between LIKE and INCLUDING is the following:

a. LIKE claims that there is a similarity of some kind between different things or situations or people. For instance, Cheese, like yoghurt, is a product derived from milk. One does not include or belong to the other: they are distinct substances with something in common.

b. INCLUDING places things or situations or people in a group: it does not in any way compare them. For instance, Dairy products, including cheese and yoghurt, are widely consumed in main courses and as desserts. Obviously, CHEESE could never include YOGHURT, nor YOGHURT include CHEESE. But both are included in the group of DAIRY PRODUCTS.

Thus, William Pereira's designs, INCLUDING those for a certain film, are what first gained him national recognition. THOSE for the film therefore belonged in the broader group of his designs.
