Asking whether (x - y) > (x + y) is nothing but asking whether -y > y or y < 0, i.e. the problem is basically asking whether y is negative or not.

Statement 1: x = 8
Hence, (y + 10) < 8 ---> y < -2
Hence, y is negative.

Sufficient

Statement 1: y = -20 < 0
Hence, y is negative.

Sufficient

The correct answer is D.
