grid usage

Can somebody tell me the proper usage of gmat grids(excel grid) in calculating time for solving problems.Actually i am totally ignorant about its usage how effective and efficient it would have been while practicing questions. Please can somebody explain its usage from A to Z I am totally novice to its usage and about its effectiveness.
