Profile Evaluation, please Stacy! Thanks!

by chris331 » Thu Dec 24, 2009 10:45 am
Hi Stacy,

I recently took the GMATs yesterday and scored a 760 (Q50, V45), 99th percentile overall.

I have a 3.0 GPA from UCSB majoring in Business Economics, Emphasis in Accounting. I know my GPA is low... but I did show a significant upward trend in the last two years in my upper division classes (do the schools take upward trend into consideration?)

I am an Asian male (26 years old). I have three years experience at a public accounting firm and will have had four years at the time I start business school. I have been promoted at the normal pace at an accounting firm (at the third year mark) and have gotten my CPA during this time. I think I can get a good recommendation from my managers here.

As far as extra-curricular activities - In college, I worked with a group to organize donor recruitment drives for potential bone marrow donors, recruiting over 500 students during time. I also have leadership role in my church currently (what do you feel about having church-related activities on the application?).

My targets are Stanford, Berkeley, NYU, UCLA, UT Austin, and USC. Am I competitive at these schools? Are all of these choices out of my range? Do I need more backups?

Thanks so much for the help!

Dear chris331,

Congratulations on your GMAT score! Outstanding!

While your GPA is slightly below average, it is still within range and the upward trend in your final two years will be noted positively. You have the foundation for a competitive application to your target schools. You have a mix of reach and reasonable, so you should have a good chance if you put together a great set of essays and recommendations. Your activities at your church are fine and should be included, especially since they are an important part of your time outside the office. You could add a true safety school to the mix to hedge your risk if you want; this would be a school outside the top 20, but definitely within the top 40.

Good luck,
Lisa
