SSAY QUESTION:
The following appeared in a proposal for a high school's annual fundraising event:
"In order to earn the most money for supplemental school programs, we will have larger and more thrilling rides at this year's School Fair, including a ferris wheel that is twice as tall as last year's ferris wheel. In addition, the game vendors will award more expensive prizes and the food stalls will showcase a variety of upscale international dishes. As a result, we will be able to charge a higher entrance fee and the dollar amount we earn via our commission on the vendors' revenues will be higher than it was last year."
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. Point out flaws in the argument's logic and analyze the argument's underlying assumptions. In addition, evaluate how supporting evidence is used and what evidence might counter the argument's conclusion. You may also discuss what additional evidence could be used to strengthen the argument or what changes would make the argument more logically sound.
YOUR RESPONSE:
The argument stated in the proposal for the fund raising event has flawed logic as it is based on very little evidence and too many assumptions. The proposal assumes that setting the large ferris wheel will ensure more earning but it fails to consider the safety aspect related to this attraction. Also as the fair is mostly for the small age group it fails to ascertain the fact that such a large and thrilling ride may not attract children of that age group.
The fund raising event proposal also makes an assumption that people will be attracted to the event even if higher entrance fee is charged for the event. This assumption is just based on the fact that expensive prizes and international dishes will be on offer. It fails to make note that in this town people might not pay high entrance fees without any certainty of winning.
Last but not the least proposal also assumes that vendors revenue will be high just based on the various attraction the event is offering. It does not take into account that high cost and unattractive rides for small age group might mean that the attendance and thus revenue might be lower than last year.
To summarize the present argument stated in the proposal is illogical and the only way the author of proposal can make this proposal interesting and logical is by listing very specific reasons or proven measures for attracting large number of crowds to the event.
