Letters of Rec - Technology Question

by CRC » Thu Aug 19, 2010 1:54 pm
How are letters of rec actually submitted? Will my recommenders be forced to answer the questions into the actually web page or will they be able to upload a PDF / Word document? One of my recommenders asked me this question and I honestly don't know the answer.

Some of the schools have word limits on the questions they pose so I'm wondering if they will need to type the answers into a text field within the site itself?

Can anyone clarify this for me?

It probably depends on each school, but most recommenders will get login details to a website where they then submit the recommendation letters.

I understand it's an online process. I'm asking if recommenders can upload the actual letter / answers to questions posed (i.e., upload a pre-prepared PDF document) or if they are required to manually type into the web form itself (i.e., like what I'm doing right now to post this...)

I had to do one recently for an past professional colleague and was able to upload a Word document. But it might vary by school.

Good luck!

Thanks, that's helpful. I'm really curious about this process for schools (like HBS) that impose a word limit on the short answer questions they ask of recommenders.

Does anyone know about HBS, specifically? Is this a rigid or "soft" maximum word count?
