mc.gill vs.rotman

by versatile » Tue May 01, 2012 2:21 am
Hi,

Can someone help with choosing one school , i know choices are personal, i want insights in a few selcted remaining areas only

My details

International student - Indian - Financial services
short term and long term goal - remain into financial services only
academic background - business management
in terms of budget - comfortable with both (yet will always consider the additional 25/30k i shed for rotman brand)
batch size - comfortable with both types - small batch or big batch

I want insights on

1) Placements - as per FT ranking, mc.gill has better placements than rotman, and rotman is again increasing its batch size this year that might really affect the opportunities for internships and placments ?, i also heard that students have been placed in US from mc.gill (though i am not aiming at US or something) but this shows the quality of education. I heard CCC of rotman is not tooo active.

2) In terms of location - is montreal inferior to toronto, i mean is it possible to do MBA at mc.gill and explore opportunities in toronto or vice versa.

3) Language - I am not good at french, i might learn basics before i go and later may learn advanced while studying ( dont know if its practical )

4) Salaries range == almost same at both the colleges, i heard the cost of living is toronto is way high

Any other points that you may feel worthwhile to differentiate.

Hi,

Congrats on your admit, Mind sharing your profile ?
You posted in May and now is July, not sure if it makes any sense to post now, but here's what I think.

1) Montreal is the 2nd largest French speaking city after Paris. Although it is Bilingual, it is recommended to learn French prior to landing in Quebec.

2) I don't quite understand the term Montreal is "inferior" to Toronto ? what are you talking about? Standard of living? per capita income? people per square Km? Networking Opportunities? Number of industries / comapnies?

3) Downtown Toronto will be much much expensive than Downtown Montreal. If you want a European type lifestyle in North America, go to Montreal. If you want a true cosmopolitian city go to Toronto.

Now the schools.

Both are strong in Finance. In fact, Canada's major chuck of Economy is formed by the financial sector. check into any website of a B school and most people opt for Finance. I suggest that you base your decision upon your target companies. Which school has more alumni / recruitment at those companies?

Also, I would think that their curriculum are very different. that should give you some direction.

Hope it helps.
