Please....I Need Your Opinions

by lionhartzero » Thu May 28, 2015 2:09 pm
So I'm at the point where I'm deciding between a couple of schools to attend for my MBA. I am not willing to put my career on hold, so I'll have to go part-time. That being said, I'll only be able to attend schools with part-time OR online courses. I've narrowed it down to a few, but wanted the opinions of those on this site that have experience on the topic.

My question is, how big of a role does the name/reputation of a school play in your success after obtaining your MBA? One school that I'm thinking about is Stern (NYU), but it costs approx $120K for a degree! Meanwhile, Villanova (which I personally think is a pretty good school) costs approx $60K. I think that both schools are great, but do you think that the extra $60K is worth it for the "name?"

Also, again, I can't attend any full time programs. There are a number of pretty respectable schools that offer online MBA programs, but do they even get any respect? Are online programs worth it? Has anyone gone through an online program and still formed a good relationship w/ classmates, resulting in good networking opportunities? For some reason, I've mentioned possibly joining an online program at some pretty good schools and others have "brushed it off" as if it meant nothing since the word "online" was included. What do you think?

Hey! I am working with a marketing firm currently. I have been working since three and a half years. I graduated four years ago. I plan to study ahead. I have heard that doing an MBA increases your pay package. I want to pursue it, but at the same time I am a little skeptical about it, I don't know if it will be worth leaving my job. Inputs welcomed.

Well, doing an MBA depends on your current situation. You need to make up your mind if you want to leave your job in the first place. MBA has value if you have the required work experience. It is very beneficial because an MBA enhances your knowledge about that particular field, don't run after money merely, run after gaining knowledge, money will come to you.

Well then you could consider an Executive MBA Program. It is mainly aimed for the experienced professionals who wish to sharpen their managerial abilities, expand their career potential and want to acquire international management experience in a multi-cultural environment. They also have flexible timings which helps you to continue with your job. A lot of companies wish to retain their employees and with an MBA degree, the employee can contribute more towards the organization. A lot of companies support these executive programs and quite a few sponsor the MBA courses as well! But you need to inform them about this initially.

I had considered doing the EMBA but really don't want to go for a part time or an executive program. If I pursue an MBA, I want to give it my 100% by solely concentrating on one thing. Also, I find working and studying extremely tedious and unnecessary. If I opt for a full time MBA program then would you suggest studying in India or abroad?

Well, studying abroad or in India, all depends on your budget. Universities in India are good as well, but if you have a good budget, I would suggest that you go abroad. Studying abroad gives the person an exposure of a different kind only. One learns more; he is exposed to global learning and learns about the people and culture too. It also enhances ones' communication skills. It is a great experience.

See, ideally it is always safe to stay with your far off kin abroad first, so if you have cousins abroad, live with them and study, it will be beneficial to you. But if you want to rule that option out, I would suggest that you either go to Australia, Singapore or Canada. These are new 'IT' places for MBA aspirants.

Brand name in the world of MBA certainly pays significantly in long term. If you are only looking for increased pay packet then considering ROI I think Villanova should be a good fit. However, if you are willing to work with the best people (atleast perceived best! ;) ) and at the best firms then you will need that brand behind you.
Also, again, I can't attend any full time programs. There are a number of pretty respectable schools that offer online MBA programs, but do they even get any respect? Are online programs worth it? I am not the right person to comment on the placements out of an online program but yes, online programs get the least attention in comparison to full time and exec programs. Major reasons include lack of peer learning and networking, not complete focus on studies. Also, online programs are good for career enhancers. So, if you plan to switch your career my advice do not even think of online programs.

Hope it helps.
