700...How are my chances?

by briangtsmith » Sun Oct 17, 2010 10:55 am
OK, I finally took the GMAT! Ended up with a 700 (42Q/42V) and expecting a 5.5. or 6.0 AWA. SO relieved to be done with that ordeal!

I told myself that, if I scored 700+, I would apply to more competitive programs. As such, I've narrowed my selection down to the following 9 schools:

Uber Elite
Harvard
U. Penn

Elite
Northwestern
Yale
UCLA

Almost Elite
Emory
Georgetown
UT-Austin
USC

Is 9 too much? I don't want to tire my recommenders, and need to make sure I have enough time to make each application great.

Would appreciate any thoughts and help!

Hi,

Thanks for your post. Your unique background in the hospitality industry is certainly a strength for your bschool applications. The average MBA applicant often comes from financial services, consulting or some sort of technical/engineering background. You will be considered part of a very small pool of applicants, which could certainly serve you well in your applications.

Your goals seem sound and logical and your experience to date is impressive. You'll want to be sure to highlight your leadership experience in your essays. Because you aren't from a typical "bschool applicant" industry, you'll want to take extra care in your resume to explain your roles and the impact you've had in each job.

Lastly, keep studying for the GMAT and keep in mind that most applicants score anywhere from 10-30 points higher on practice tests then on the actual exam. Given your school selection, I would suggest you aim for 680+. With a score of 680 or higher, you can certainly be competitive for admission at the schools on your list.

Best,

Stacey

Hi,

Thanks for the update. Yes, if you can score a 720 it's safe to say that you could indeed be competitive at top 10 programs. Good job on the practice tests. Keep up the good work!
