Academic Minor

by SmartMuffin » Wed Aug 17, 2011 7:45 pm
Hi all, I've got a brief question for you.

Does an academic minor matter much when it comes to business school admissions?

I'm active duty military finishing up my Bachelors degree with an eventual goal of applying to a top 20 MBA program. My major is in Finance. Currently, I'm on track for a minor in history (selected merely because it's a subject I enjoy). But now that I'm focused on making myself a good candidate for business school, I'm wondering if I should change that.

Should I keep the history minor, change to something business related, or drop the minor altogether which would allow me to get my degree faster? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I do not think your minor would be weighted heavily compared to your overall GPA and undergraduate school. If you are only a couple of courses away you might as well consider finishing but if you are a significant number of courses away you shouldn't complete the minor merely for the benefit of a future business school application.

Follow up question:

If the minor does not really matter much, does it matter what elective courses I take to finish up my degree? Would I be better off taking more challenging calculus or statistics courses to demonstrate analytical ability, or would I be better off taking less challenging courses that would probably be easier on my GPA?

If you take one or two less challenging courses, people will not likely notice or care. They DO look at the courses, but if calculus is not so useful to you now, you can forego it.

Calculus and statistics do matter to admissions committees because you will utilize both in MBA classes. So, I would recommend you take one or both, especially if you feel you can perform well.

Thanks for the help. This should be my last question for a bit.

My situation right now is that all I have left is a few credits in my major, and about fifteen additional credits needed. Most minors at my school require about fifteen credits to earn a minor. So basically, your suggestion is that rather than pursue a minor, I use those fifteen credits on various elective courses that may showcase some of my abilities that would be required for an MBA (such as math, statistics, business, etc.)?

The school will review the transcript and give consideration to specific courses?

Yes, the school reviews your transcripts and looks for individual math courses like statistics and calculus especially if your quantitative score on your GMAT is low and/or if you have non-quantitative work experience.

But it might be possible to do both. Check which minors allow additional classes.
