Couldn't cross the fence

by crowolta » Mon Sep 27, 2010 4:51 pm
Hi,

Appeared for exam today and after all my preparation couldn't cross 700 mark, My main source of study was Manhattan GMAT. I really like the material and I supplemented it with some Kaplan and OG 11th Edition.

In the practice exams of MGMAT I had following graph. ( I still love MGMAT material , I could at least reach 600)

Starting from 08/15/2010

Test 1.

TYPE SCORE ESTIMATED PERCENTILE RANK
Quantitative 38 55 %
Verbal 29 56 %
Total 560 57 %

Test 2

TYPE SCORE ESTIMATED PERCENTILE RANK
Quantitative 44 73 %
Verbal 33 69 %
Total 640 80 %

Test 3

TYPE SCORE ESTIMATED PERCENTILE RANK
Quantitative 41 64 %
Verbal 35 77 %
Total 630 79 %

Test 4

TYPE SCORE ESTIMATED PERCENTILE RANK
Quantitative 47 81 %
Verbal 39 89 %
Total 700 93 % (at least here I saw 700 number)

Test 5
TYPE SCORE ESTIMATED PERCENTILE RANK
Quantitative 47 81 %
Verbal 34 72 %
Total 670 89 %

Test 6
TYPE SCORE ESTIMATED PERCENTILE RANK
Quantitative 47 81 %
Verbal 35 77 %
Total 680 90 %

I did give Kaplan Online test and there too I had more or less same scores

Kaptest 1 -> 610
Kaptest 2 -> 620
Kaptest 3 -> 680
Kaptest 4 -> 670

Test on Kaplan test were brutal , in the range of 530 - 540

Surprising though my GMATPREP test which I gave three months before starting GMAT study was 620 and 640. I never gave them again.

So after encouraging results from MGMAT and Kaplan I thought I am all ready to beat the gmat, but performance was pretty disappointing.

TYPE SCORE ESTIMATED PERCENTILE RANK
Quantitative 45 72%
Verbal 27 42%
Total 600 64%

I do need to better my Quantitative but as you can see Verbal is the most hit. I was really happy to see MGMAT material and structure of SC is very good. I still believe my main problem is with CR and RC. I never tried MGMAT's CR approach of writing notes on CR passage. Question hardly gives 2 min. I am not sure how one will manage to write notes about CR.

Anyway I am now trying to see how to better this score, What more I could do to push my Verbal score into 40s. I may have to rethink the whole way I think about these questions but not getting any idea of how to do it.

If anyone is benefited by any of Veritas or other material please advice.

Your score is indeed lower than you would expect given your practice scores. However, it is not much lower than the GMATPrep scores you had! To get a truly accurate score, your best bet is to take a GMATPrep test the week before the test. Your scores in MGMAT might have been improving, but it may just mean that you're getting better at MGMAT and not at the real thing. They're very close, but there's still a distinction.

About verbal: I found that the PowerScore CR Bible is hands down the best book for CR. It also has some nice tips for RC! You may want to invest in that to get more comfortable with CR and RC. Veritas books are pretty good too, the RC book has tons of practice questions. However, I found it a bit lacking in the strategy department. It really depends on what you need, a theoretical review or just practice.

But before anything you should know that going from a 27 to a 40 in verbal is not going to be easy. You will have to invest in more practice (try the OG supplement for verbal) and some other books as well (CR Bible, Veritas RC book, Kaplan Verbal Workbook). However, if you're really motivated, you can do it! Just don't neglect quant either - you are not at the level where you could afford not to practice quant.

Thanks Dana,

For your suggestion, I have already order CR bible, Planning to again stick to my routine and see if I can beat the exam again

Do you have any opinion on Veritas 15 tests , whether they are close to real GMAT. I haven't heard much about those tests and any help in that direction will be great.

thanks again.

I haven't had that much experience with them, but here's what I wrote a while back when I was asked to review the Veritas Prep Live Online course:

The Veritas Prep course also grants access to 15 computer adaptive tests (CATs): seven developed by Veritas Prep, five by 800score and three by Thomson Peterson's. My one experience with Veritas Prep tests was pretty accurate (I had the same score I received the following day on GMATprep), but I would like to point out one possible problem with having tests from so many companies. The scoring algorithm will not be the same and there are subtle differences between the quality and wording of questions for each company. These facts might affect the degree to which scores from two different CATs are comparable, so the results you obtain might not be clear indicators of your progress. I would advise students to take the two GMATprep tests from mba.com and use the seven tests developed by Veritas Prep. Nine CATs are sufficient for most students.
