Round 1 vs Round 2 applications

Hi everyone!

I've been thinking a lot about the best application strategy and would like to know your opinion.

I read that applying on round 1 enhances the probability of acceptance in our first choice b-school since the class is still to be filled. On the other hand, I've also read that it is wise to apply to our first choice program only on the second round since we'll be able to practice interviews and possibly get an acceptance letter which could leave us more confortable and confident when applying to our first choice program.

What do you think of this tradeoff?

Naaaah. nonsense. You can practice interviews in other ways, and there's no reason you shouldn't be comfortable with an interview (okay, a little bit nervous! ;) ). Play the statistics and go with the chances.

From what I have gathered is that applying in R1 is beneficial for the following reason. During R1 admissions is starting with a blank slate. They kind of know they want the class to take, but no one has taken any of the spots. You can help them define these spots.

During R2 a portion of the spots are taken and the class begins to take its shape. The admissions team is now looking to complement and supplemnts the strenghts and weaknesses that already exist. Thus the earlier you apply the more beneficial your chances are.

In terms of preparing essays and for interviews. If you are motivated to go to school you will make this happen. If you are looking to apply in Fall 2012 for admission in 2013, you are already on the right track and will be fine.

Exact what BizSchoolPrep said is the best way to go. You will not be admitted in R1 if they don't think you're a strong candidate. You'll be waitlisted if they have any doubts.

Yeah, Bizschoolprep makes a point and the pros and cons for each round is a great guide to think about it.
My goal will be to prepare myself as good as I can to apply on round 1. I'm not a rockstar candidate and I really want to have the best chances to single out in the crowd. Afterall, I have the next 11 months for preparation. The first step is to beat the gmat (I've scheduled it for the 2nd of April so I have 3 months of study), ask for recommendations, do the TOEFL by June-July and then prepare essays and interviews.
