GMAT Score Good Enough for Top 10?

by Calabash » Wed Nov 28, 2012 2:18 pm
I took the GMAT a couple of years ago and scored a 700 - 41Q (58th percentile) and 44V (97th percentile).

I retook the GMAT this week and scored a 700 again, however my quant improved a bit - 44Q (63rd percentile) and 93rd percentile on Verbal.

My first choice, and in some sense my only choice, is Berkeley. I was hoping I would score do even better on quant than 63rd, and was ready to apply immediately for the 2nd round of admission, the deadline for which is tomorrow. I keep hearing about the "80/80 rule" for top b-schools (80% percentile in both quant and verbal), and now feel discouraged to apply because of my score. I do feel I could do better than 63rd percentile, and was not feeling well the second time I took the test. However, I'm not sure I can score in the 80th percentile on quant.

In reality, I also graduated summa cum laude from an elite university, studying Economics and Finance nonetheless. I have a transcript that proves strong math ability. In the last 4 years I have been working in corporate finance for a globally recognized firm, where I have climbed the ladder from an Analyst to an Associate.

Is a school like Berkeley out of reach with my GMAT score? Should I risk taking it again and applying later?
