What do I do?

by target_mba2010 » Sat Sep 26, 2009 10:49 am
Hi,
I have given my first attempt of GMAT last week and scored a disappointing 590(Q 42,V 29).
A brief of my profile-
I am an Indian male Techie with 2 yrs of work experience in India's leading software firm.I have a GPA of 2.4(out of 4) of my undergraduate engineering degree.I have a limited extra curricular achievements to show on my resume which includes supporting a NGO financially.
I am interested in pursuing MBA in marketing/communications/advertising.
I am planning for a second attempt of GMAT in next 2 months time. Before that, need some clarifications about the following queries:
1. What are my chances of getting into a descent B school in US with the above profile and an improved GMAT score?
2. If point 1 is valid, what should be the minimum score I should be looking for? If it isnt, what are options that I have in the present scenario with the score of 590?
Any thoughts are highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Arpit

Arpit - I'd suggest that you take some more time to study and re-take GMAT.
I am an Indian male Techie with 2 yrs of work experience in India's leading software firm.
You do not have enough experience to apply this year. Even if you push it, the typical Indian-Male-IT profile is going to make it extremely tough for you to apply and get accepted with such a low GMAT score.
You could still retake gmat, apply this year to third tier schools to see if that works out for you. You still have time to apply in second round. Schools like kenan flagler or state schools will be your best bet at this point. Again, it will be extremely tough for you to apply for a full-time job once you graduate. You may want to wait up another year and then apply. Depends what are you willing to choose - quality MBA program or just another MBA program that may not even get you a good job.
I have a GPA of 2.4(out of 4) of my undergraduate engineering degree.I have a limited extra curricular achievements to show on my resume which includes supporting a NGO financially.
Let me know your actual percentage. It could be that you've not calculated your GMAT correctly. Where did you get your degree from? Was it US or India? Is your work experience in US or India?

1. What are my chances of getting into a descent B school in US with the above profile and an improved GMAT score?
Anything in the top 25 will not be possible. Not with this kind of profile. You could set up a free consultant to boost your resume/profile / work experience for an hour. You are competing against a very competitive crowd.
2. If point 1 is valid, what should be the minimum score I should be looking for? If it isnt, what are options that I have in the present scenario with the score of 590?
Present scenario - you could apply to 3rd tier and below schools with this score, limited work experience and very limited activities. You should atleast me targeting over 650+ and 3-4 yrs of work experience to get into a better school along with some good community service / leadership experience under your belt.

MBA is a meaningful degree - its not just another degree that you are trying to get. So do explain why are you in a rush to get this degree now? If you cannot come up with a reasonable answer, you can't convince the admissions committee. What is it that you are trying to get out of your MBA? Think through your answers.

Hope this helps.
