Test Day Strategy

by tkherrmann » Sun Jun 21, 2009 3:46 pm
Hi everyone,

I'm taking the GMAT this upcoming Saturday. I attempted to search for a thread like this, but could not find one; if one exists, please post the link!

Anyway, I was wondering what advice people had to someone on test day. Of course, I've been doing problems for 1 hour daily the past three months. I have a good sleep schedule (I go to bed at 9pm and wake up at 5:30 am) and practice GMAT problems in the morning because my test is at 8 am.

My practice test (with AWA) scores are 760 (50Q, 44V; after 1 month studying) and 760 (50Q and 44V; 1 week ago, crazy that it was the exact same). Obviously, I'll be thrilled if I get this on test day.

I read another post that suggested asking for 2 or 3 erasable boards so you don't have to waist time waiting for a new one. Any other suggestions with this? I don't really need it for verbal, just quant.

Any other suggestions about preparing for test day? How early do they let you start your test? Mine is at 8 am, but I'm going to arrive in downtown Chicago (where my test is) early so that I have enough time to wake up, do 5-10 problems so that my brain wakes up, maybe even do some light reading.

Finally, what kind of snacks do people come with? I'm definitely planning on bringing something that I can eat a small amount of quickly between breaks.

Any other advice/suggestions for test-day would be awesome. Regardless of my score, I'm planning on posting a debrief here to let people know how it goes.

Cheers,
Tim

Don't eat 'between breaks', eat DURING your breaks :D
I would suggest granola bars. I think chocolate bars have too much sugar in them, but that might be good for some people.

You can take a bathroom break too, but then you have to worry about how far the bathroom is. I suggest only drinking enough so that you aren't thirsty.

also, at break time i would make it very clear to the administrators that you are going to your locker to take a snack, so they don't suspect you of looking up notes.

I would not ask for more than one noteboard. They might be nice and say yes, but the GMAC policy says you should only get one so I think it's unethical to ask.

Thanks for the tips! I'm definitely not planning on drinking much water that morning -- lol. I remember taking the PSAT once in high school and having to go to the bathroom the whole time. It sucked.

I'll let everyone know how I do Saturday afternoon!

Cheers,
Tim
