Profile Evaluation !!

by srisri0910 » Thu Jun 07, 2012 9:16 am
Hi all
I am an Indian Female. I recently took my gmat and scored a 710 ( 50 Math, 36 Verbal, 5.5 AWA). Yet to take my Toefl. I belong to the less privileged IT sector :P . I will have 2 years experience by fall 2013 (in Tata Consultancy Services Ltd )
  • I was awarded "Star of the Learners' Group" during my training at TCS.
I was even given a place in the TCS LIREL Honor rolls
I did my B.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering ) in a college which is considered best in our city and probably among the top 20 in our state. I was our class topper with a percentage of around 79 ( It is probably equivalent to a gpa between 3.5 and 4 ).
  • I was the Vice president for our department association ASCi ( Association of Computer Intellects ) and we as a team organized a national level technical symposium as well.
I worked as the Co-ordinator of our Department magazine "The PiCSEl"
Prior to that I even worked ass the editorial board member " The PiCSEl" contributing articles.
I even participated in various other events at our college and was the Representative of our class during my four years at our college.
I was even a part of a voluntary organization Pratigyna during my college days
I scored a 95.4% during my intermediate and my acads were consitent througout my schooling as well . I scored an 88% in the national level tenth examination. During my schooling I was a pretty active student and I was the Runners' at a city level chess competition and semi finalist at a city level Shuttle competition organized by YMCA.
Hope I gave some background about myself. I want to apply for Fall 2013. Please do suggest me colleges in US and India for my MBA . Please Evaluate my profile and suggest me how to improve my profile .
My initial List of schools include :
1) ISB- India
2) Cornell University ( Johnson business school )
3) Carnegie Mellon University ( Tepper business School )
4) Emory University
5) University of Texas, Austin ( Mc Combs)
6) TAMU, College Station ( May's )
7) Ohio State University
8) Michigan State University
9) Southern Mathotist University (Cox's Business School )
10) Brigham Young University
I would like to apply to a total of around 5-6 universities. Please tell whether the above schools are within my reach or are they ambitious taking into considetation my profile. Suggest me other options as well.

I strongly suggest you work for at least another year or two. Right now, you don't have enough experience. You're competing against other IT folks who will have around 4-6 years of work experience at matriculation.

Keep in mind that an MBA is just one line item on your resume. As an MBA student, you will have a much tougher time competing against your more experienced classmates for jobs, because recruiters will be looking at your entire professional profile, not just the name of your b-school.

You seem to have a good start to your career thus far, but you've barely started (just 1 year so far). You are not ready for b-school yet.

Thanx a bunch Alex for your reply and for you suggestions :)
But due to certain issues and circumstances I have no other option apart from next august to start my masters. That is the very reason I am worried about the colleges into which I can make it. I know my experience is very low compared to others who are applying for their mba but I have no option.
Please can you suggest any other way on how to improve my profile so that I can overcome (at least slightly ) the negative effect of less experience. And also can you suggest some business schools in US which are more likely to accept a profile like mine. ( Given that I can write good essays )

It would be really a great help If you could help me out.

Regards
Sri

Hi Sri,

Your profile is weak in many aspects - your GMAT score is decent but still average if compared to other IT applicants. The extra currics which you have mentioned are all at college level and most of them are similar to those presented by many applicants. So, there is little to differentiate you there. The biggest challenge is your low work ex. which will make it almost impossible to even get an interview call.

Still if you are very keen on applying to B schools remove top 5 from your list and apply to
6) TAMU, College Station ( May's )
7) Ohio State University
8) Michigan State University
9) Southern Methodist University (Cox's Business School )
10) Brigham Young University

These are the ones where you may be have some chances but a lot will depend on how to present your profile - work responsibilities, achievements and how good your recos are.

Hope this helps.

Thanx apphelp for giving a greater insight into what is lacking in my profile. I know im definitely on a lower side when my experience is considered but I realized it is much more than what I thought. Can you please suggest some ways of improving my profile in short span to at least partly overcome the negative effect of less experience? And also please do suggest some other schools as well. I would be really grateful if I can get that information.
By the way I have a doubt, will part-time work experience be given any weight ? During my college days I worked with an institute to develop a software required for them. It took about 4 months and in total I worked with them for around 6 months.

Regards
Sri

Look at Smeal, Urbana Champaign and Maryland Smith. Yes, do talk about your part time experience. I terms of your regular experience highlight your awards or early promotions. Try to paint a story that projects and responsibilities handled by you are generally given to employees with 2-3 years of experience. Your recommendations will play a pivotal role here.

Thank you AppHelp for your suggestions :) . I will surely get back to you incase I need any help. I have a small doubt ...Recommendations from work place play a major role compared to the ones from college right? Are the professors required to send the recommendation to the university through the link which the university provides or do they have to give the reco's in written format? Please do clarify it to me.
