ONLY WOMEN

by sulabh » Tue Jun 10, 2008 11:12 am
The Daughters of the American Revolution, a volunteer service organization, admits as members only women who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution.

1 admits as members only women who can prove lineal descent
2 admit as members only women who can prove lineal descent
3 admits as members women who can prove lineal descent
4 only admit as members women who can prove lineal descent
5 admits as members women who can prove lineal descent only

Man am having trouble with lots of OAs today !!!
OA is 1 but 'only' in the sentence suggest that the organization admits only women(and among women only those who can prove lineal descent[/u] from a patriot of the American Revolution).
To me 3 seems plausible.

A makes more sense to me if it is written in the following manner:

"The Daughters of the American Revolution, a volunteer service organization, admits, as members, only women who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution. "

i.e., a comma after admits & before only women.

Thanks!

1. "Daughters of the American Revolution" is the name of the organization so singular. This means that we need "admits"

A C and E left

C - changes original meaning. It leaves the option for others to be members
E - awkward placement of only

A is correct
