The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerve endings in the mouth as does a rise in temperature; this stimulation sometimes results in the activation of certain biological cooling mechanisms, one of which is perspiration.

In A and B, makes (singular) does not agree with foods (plural).
Eliminate A and B.

C: like a rise in temperature does
like + subject + verb is ALWAYS WRONG.
Eliminate C.

In E, the reason...is because is redundant.
Eliminate E.

The correct answer is D.

Hi Mitch,
I chose D as well but i have confusion in D. "These foods" is the correct usage? Last week I posted a question in which usage of "these" was incorrect. It was only "these" though and there was nothing else attach to it.

If you can please give a simple example of error and correct sentence.

Thanks,
Rakesh

Hi rakeshd347,

Between answer choices D and E, you'll notice that D uses the phrase "these foods" and E uses the phrase "they."

In context, the word "they" is ambiguous; since it's a plural pronoun, is COULD refer to either "people" or "spicy foods." While we both know that the "intent" is to refer to "spicy foods", the wording in answer E isn't specific enough. Usually, the way to "fix" an ambiguous pronoun is to remove the pronoun and put the specific noun back in its place.

While you may not love the style in answer D, it is grammatically correct.

Generally, this + noun and these + noun will NOT constitute an error.
Correct: THIS SPECIES is prized for its intelligence.
Correct: THESE EFFECTS can be dangerous.

Generally, this + verb and these + verb WILL constitute an error.
Incorrect: THIS WAS lucky.
Incorrect: THESE CAUSE problems.

It should be noted that these + verb has appeared in one OA -- to an SC in GMAT Prep -- but this SC should be considered an EXCEPTION:
