Question: Company Y employs c women and d men. Do the woman at company Y earn an annual average salary greater than 25000$?

IMO the answer is E What's the OA.

Here is my reasoning.

Stmt 1. Company Y pays its employees a total of 30000$(c+d) in salaries annually.
Sum of salaries ( Men + Women) - Total salaries paid to men = Total salary paid to all women. Thus Total salary paid to women divided by number of women c is the average salary paid to women.
So, (30000$(c+d) - 30,000d)/c but this information is not sufficient to answer the question

Stmt 2 The men at company Y earn earn a avg annual salary of 34000$. 2 by itself just gives info about the men average and total. So insufficient.

Combining the 2 stmts. Total salary ( 30,000 ( c+d) ) and total salary paid out to men 34,000d.
So,(( 30,000 ( c+d) ) - 34,000d )/ C will also not answer the question . So insuff.

Thus E
For starters why i posted this question was because i felt the answer could be solved from statement 1..
OA: E
Overall the question asks whether the avg salary for woman is >25000$

Now from statement 1
Total sal = 30000*(c+d) = 30000c + 30000d
so i feel the 30,000c component reflects the total salary for woman... so therefore there avg = 30000c/c = 30000

but my answer is wrong...

what am i missing ????

@neerajkumar1_1 . The 30,000(c+d) is the sum of all salaries. The 30,000 is the average salary of everyone in the company, while (c+d) is the number of people working in the company. Average * number of entities = Sum.

It is true that 30,000( c+d) = 30,000c + 30,000d. But the 30,000 is the average salary of everyone and not just the women.

To simplify, I'll use an example to illustrate . If 10 men earn an average of $25 and 20 women earn an average of $10. Is the total average* # of men / # of men = the average of men ( 25)?

(25*10 + 20*10)/30 = 450/30 = $15 is the average of the entire group.

So, while it is true that 15( 10 men + 20 women) = 450 , but 15(10)/ 10 is not the average salary of the men, given that the average is 25.

In a nutshell, the Average salary of all * # of women/# of women is not the same as the true average of women salary.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Hey Neeraj,

But the answer still remains the same. From either statement we can't find an anser & by combining 2 statements the average salary of women becomes:

(30000 C + 30000 D - 34000D) / C.

Since there are both the variable C & D, we cant find an answer.
Correct me if I am wrong.
