A one-inch line segment has been divided into fifths, as indicated by large tick marks, and also into eighths, as indicated by smaller tick marks. What is the shortest length of any line segment bound by any two tick marks?

A 1/80

B 1/40

C 1/20

D 1/13

E 1/8

Is it B?

I would approach this question by converting them both into the same denominator, which is 40.

So the smaller mark would be 5/40, 10/40, 15/40, 20/40...or simply 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30...40.

Large mark would be 8/40, 16/40, 24/40, 32/40...or simply 8, 16, 24, 32, 40.

Find the smallest difference between the two and add the 40 below as the denominator and you got your answer.

When the one-inch line segment will be divided into fifths, then the large tick marks will be at 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, 4/5 which is 8/40, 16/40, 24/40, 32/40.
When the one inch line segment will be divided into eighths, then the small tick marks will be at 1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8 which is 5/40, 10/40, 15/40, 20/40, 25/40, 30/40, 35/40.

The smallest distance is between 2/5 = 16/40 and 3/8 = 15/40 or between 3/5 = 24/40 and 5/8 = 25/40 which is 1/40.

The correct answer is (B).
