Dried grass clippings mixed into garden soil gradually decompose, providing
nutrients for beneficial soil bacteria. This results in better-than-average plant
growth. Yet mixing fresh grass clippings into garden soil usually causes poorer-
than-average plant growth.

Which one of the following, if true, most helps to explain the difference in plant
growth described above?

(A) The number of beneficial soil bacteria increases whenever any kind of plant
material is mixed into garden soil.
(B) Nutrients released by dried grass clippings are immediately available to
beneficial soil bacteria.
(C) Some dried grass clippings retain nutrients originally derived from commercial
lawn fertilizers, and thus provide additional enrichment to the soil.
(D) Fresh grass clippings mixed into soil decompose rapidly, generating high levels
of heat that kill beneficial soil bacteria.
(E) When a mix of fresh and dried grass clippings is mixed into garden soil, plant
growth often decreases.

My skeletal work for this Arg: (May help)
[DG + GS ~ decomp --> Nutrient Bac] -> grow > avg g.
YET
[FG + GS ~ {decomp --> Nutrient Bac}] -> poor > avg p.

All abbreviated and the section in {} is missing part in Arg as compared with the previous premise. Underlined in the actual paragraph.
After this I was literally searching for the term which contains Soil, Bacteria, and most Important the "Decomposition". Nothing fits better but

(D) Fresh grass clippings mixed into soil decompose rapidly, generating high levels of heat that kill beneficial soil bacteria.

It clearly says.. Decomp Rapid --> Heat --> Kill Bacteria

PS: Cause --> Effect

1) Dried grass clippings gradually decompose and result in better than average plant growth when mixed into garden soil.
2) Fresh grass clippings result in poorer than average plant growth when mixed into garden soil.

The question asks for explanation as to why this is. The correct answer will draw some distinctions between dried and fresh clippings.

A) Since any kind of plant material increases the beneficial bacteria, this doesn't explain why fresh clipping hurt.

B) This statement only refers to the dried grass clippings and why it is beneficial. It doesn't address why fresh clippings hurt plant growth.

C) This does basically the same as B except with different parameters

D) This is the correct answer. It explains how fresh clippings are different (it decomposes rapidly) and why it results in poorer growth (it generates high levels of heat that kill beneficial soil bacteria)

E) This does nothing to explain why fresh clippings are not beneficial.
