In the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians, the refusal of each side to acknowledge the other as a legitimate national movement is closer to the heart of the problem than is any other issue.

B and E are out because we need a construction " closer - than "

B and E would be correct if we had a construction "as close as" however the const used here is closer as


C is out because of " each side to acknowledge another "
it should be "one side acknowledging another" or "each side acknowledging the other" (as in a)


D is out because the "that" introducing a subordinate clause is not required. As well as cause of the same error in C

IMO A
Guys to ace this SC only rule to be kept in mind is the difference between other Vs another
(very confusing to most of the students) & Yes 'closer-than' is the deciding factor between the correct and incorrect option.

other- when we know only two items are compared.
another - when we don't know the # of items compared i.e just assume more than two.

Quick scan will reveal that A and E are the only eligible candidates. We can knock off E because of incorrect idiomatic structure -closer as

A is the winner.

Just to clarify a little bit:

1) You shouldn't assume "another" means more than two.
2) This is especially true in the phrase "one another", which is regularly used of two things: The two of them refused to recognize one another
