When to apply?

by atulmong_a » Sun Sep 05, 2010 7:51 am
Hi,

I am a Mechanical Engineer from IIT Delhi, currently working in Credit Suisse Investment Banking Analytics Division. I am preparing for GMAT and hope to apply in January 2011. I will have more than 2 years of experience when in September 2011. Also, I am handling my family business from past 5 years so can show additional work experience.

As I have started preparing in last week of August, I am planning to give GMAT in November end, so that I have 1 month time for essays and SOPs.

My question is that will it be a wise decision to apply in January or in other words will 1 month be sufficient for essays and SOPs. Or should I apply next year in Octobar? Also, given my profile above do you think I have good chances for getting a top college.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Preparing your business school applications always takes longer and is more work than anticipated. If you are concerned about your ability to put together your best possible application by January, you should consider waiting.

You also have less experience than will many of your classmates so that it would strengthen your application to have more time in a corporate environment. As I am sure you know, you will be in a very large and very competitive applicant pool. There are many thousands of talented and successful Indian applicants with technical backgrounds. That lowers everyone's chance of acceptance considerably. Anything that you can do to stand out from the rest and to minimize weaknesses such as little experience can help.

I cannot tell you what schools you will get into, particularly without knowing your GMAT, your GPA or really what you have been doing in your job. Even with that information I can only guide you to schools that are likely to accept you.

Good luck,
Tani Wolff
