Letters of Recommendation

I am applying to a certain MBA program and would like some guidance on my recommendations:

I have a close family friend (whom I have no professional interaction with, but who knows me very well on a personal level) who is well-connected with the MBA program at this school.

Would it be advantageous to ask him to write me a letter of rec for this school? Or should I only stick to recommend-ers who have worked with me in a professional setting? The school asks for 2 letters of rec. Thanks!

Hi MBAJ,

Thanks for your post. Ideally you should have two professional recommendations. However, it sounds like the best way for you to utilize this potential recommender would be to have him write you an "unsolicited" letter of recommendation. Essentially they would write a letter to the admissions, but not submit it a part of the application. It can be sent in via mail or email and addressed to the admissions committee.

Should this letter address anything specifically? Or should it solely testify to my character, work ethic, etc?

Hi,

Good question. This should be a character reference, but should also address your fit with the program. Highlighting skills like leadership and teamwork are always great too if that have the context to provide that type of information.
