1000 SC's Question 32

by manishankar » Thu Jul 22, 2010 2:23 am
31. A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass.
(A) A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass.
(B) After passing through a red giant stage, depending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.
(C) After passing through a red giant stage, a star's mass will determine if it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.
(D) Mass determines whether a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.(D)
(E) The mass of a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will determine whether it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

Comments: Correct answer seems to be D, however D says "Mass determines..... "
Whereas answer B is very speicific in mentioing "Depending on it's (Star's) Mass". I am tempted to pick B

Please correct me

Regards,
Mani

B is the case of Misplaced Modifier that happens in long sentences ( especially when complete sentence is underlined, always look for it )
After passing through a red giant stage, depending on its mass, a star..

a star should be next to opening modifier as below,
After passing through a red giant stage, a star...

D is very straight.
I am on a break !!

hey Suman,
Please clarify me.

In B "After passing through a red giant stage, depending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf"

why can't "depending on its mass" be a non essential modifier here.....

And i guess"depending on its mass" correctly modifies the preceding one "After passing through a red giant stage"

Thanks in advance

I agree with Suman

D is very straight.
IMO:C
becoz the mass of star determines and not the mass of red gaint.

OA plz
