the most expensive item

by sanju09 » Wed Apr 08, 2009 4:18 am
Henry purchased 3 items during a sale. He received a 20 percent discount off the regular price of the most expensive item of a 10 percent discount off the regular price of each of the other 2 items. Was the total discount of these three items greater than 15 percent of the sum of the regular prices of the 3 items?

(1) The regular price of the most expensive item was $50, and the regular price of the next most expensive item was $20.

(2) The regular price of the least expensive item was $15.

Stmt I

most expensive 50, discount = 10
next most expensive 20, discount = 2
least expensive cannot be >20, lets say it is 20, discount = 2

total percentage discount > 15%

If you keep on reducing the price of the least expensive book, the total percentage discount will keep increasing

suff

Stmt II

Least expensive = 15, discount = 1.5
the other two books will be atleast 15 but we do not know their price...it can be $15 and $15.01 or it can be $100 and $500

So depending on the value of the books the total percentage discount will vary.
