RC Baffles

by [email protected] » Fri Jan 02, 2009 12:11 am
Every time I time my RC practice, I end up reading lots of 'words' and fast moving sentences. I never am able to see these sentences as logical blocks representing specific ideas.

After I am finished reading the passage, all I can remember are words and some of the flash memory facts. Time factor is killing me.Is there a way out?

Your letting time control the situation when your understanding of the passage should be controlling it. It's better to slow down and get 3 out of 5 right then to speed up and get 1 out of 5 right. The 4 wrongs will destroy your score compared 2.

Practice reading RC passages from other sources (GRE, LSAT, magazines, newpapers, etc) without timing and see what your "natural" pace is. Be sure you understand the passage completely. Use your finger on the page to match your pace and let that be your baseline speed. Then speed it up...just a little bit at first, skip a word or two (grammatical words that you do not need to read in my mind to recognize ...e.g. the, and, one, if, it, so). See if you can still understand completely. Then speed it up again and continue doing this. Use your finger on the page to force yourself to read faster by moving your finger faster.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I would better try these suggestions and be slow initially to find out my actual speed.

Thanks again!
