A friend of mine said that the exam now has more data sufficiency questions than in the past. Is this true? I took the exam 2 months ago and now am concerned that I should be preparing a different way.

I think your friend is describing a change that's occurred over the last few years, and not over the last few months. Four years ago, you could expect to see about 13 DS questions on the GMAT. Now, you'd expect to see about 17 DS questions. I'm not aware that anything has changed in the last two months.
