Applying with a significant other...

by mba02 » Fri Sep 18, 2009 9:21 am
Hello,

I had an application clarification question. My girfriend and are applying to the same business schools and want to do this together (i.e. if one gets in and the other doesn't, neither would attend).

I have noticed that some applications do in fact ask if you are applying with a "significant other". Given that we are not currently engaged how do we approach this on the applications??

We are looking at top 15 schools. Both have solid credentials.

Is there a benefit to applying as a packaged deal?

Thanks in advance!

Dear mba02,

You should definitely respond that you are applying with a significant other if asked, even though you are not engaged or married. You both hold the other in that regard, so you should make that known. There is not an advantage to applying as a "package deal", but it is something the schools should know if you are both committed to only going to a school where you both get in. Most schools will still decide on each of you on your own merits, but there is always the possibility the school will factor in your relationship if it is definite on one of you and unsure of the other.

Good luck,
Lisa
