670... disappointed

by shymit » Thu Apr 16, 2009 5:31 pm
670 [Q48,V34]......

Disappointed with my score. I prepared for over 2 months. I had good preparation and feel that I could have scored more. Just did not perform well on the test day. I basically followed OG11, MGMAT SC, Princeton Review. I did MGMAT tests and GMAT Prep tests. Was scoring 700-720 consistently on the tests.

I plan to give GMAT again in the next month or so. I plan to do more simulation tests. However, I have exhausted the MGMAT tests (already done 2 times) and GMAT prep. Can anyone guide me regarding good preparation tests which are close to GMAT? Are ARCO tests good?

GMAT Score:750

If i were you, i would focus completely on verbal. I would do CR Bible or Manhattan CR to build concepts. I would practice more CR and RC from additional sources but only the ones that have explanations. I would revise Manhattan SC.

As far as the tests are concerned, MGMAT and GMATprep are the best sources. Since you were scoring 700 on the tests, there isn't much improvement that can happen in 1 month solely based on taking additional tests.. Your best bet is to take a break for some time, build your concepts and then take a GMAT prep in 3-4 weeks. Since you have taken GMATprep once you should score atleast a 740-750. If you do, only then go ahead and book a test date, in case 700+ is your target. If not then it will take you another 6-8 weeks of preparation.

Else just chill, 670 is a good score and with a good application can get you into any school!!!

You can check out my debrief for any other pointers that might help.

670 is definitely a great score, but I can understand why you would feel disappointed if you were scoring 700+ in practice.

I think focusing on Verbal is also a good idea. How does your performance breakdown in the verbal section? I mean where do you feel weakest?

If it's CR, consider the CR Bible from PowerScore. I haven't used it but I've heard good things about it. https://www.amazon.com/PowerScore-GMAT-C ... 0972129634

If it's SC, consider the GMATFix Verbal interactive flashcards. They're a very effective way to internalize all the different grammar rules tested by the GMAT; the good thing is that they are organized by SC topic (Modifiers, Verbs, Parrallelism....) so you can organize your study. You can evaluate them for free https://www.gmatfix.com/flashcards_verbal.shtml

For Reading Comprehension, the Official Guide is the way to go I think. Whereas it does a poor job of explaining things in other areas of the test, the RC solutions are solid. Besides, there aren't really 'rules' and 'lessons' for RC. Just stay organized and focus.

For verbal, I put lot of effort on SC. But still there were questions on exam that I could not figure out. For CR, I skimmed MGMAT CR....didn't do it in detail. Found out to be ok. For RC, I did OG11 in 2 times. I am confident in Quant. and still feel I can score more in there.

Thanks for the advice. I will keep you guys posted.
