Question:
Rather than using traditional question and answer interviews to evaluate job candidates, employers should observe candidates as they perform some of the job's actual tasks.
Response:
Some people think that employers should observe candidates as they perform some of the job's actual tasks, as this will help the employer to assess the effectiveness of employee on the job. Other people support the claim that employers should go with the traditional question and answer interviews to evaluate the job candidates. The issue is controversial and a closer examination reveals that the traditional question and answer interviews helps in evaluating the job candidate more effectively.
One reason is that candidates who have come to attend an interview may not adjust immediately to the environment of employer, which is new for the prospective employee. There are many environmental factors such as the methodology of recording data of a company. The way data is recorded in one company may not be recorded in the same way in the other company. Another factor would be, for jobs related to software industry, there are mulitple platforms such as LINUX, Windows, Apple Mac where the skillset remains the same but the application of skills differ due to environment. Therefore, it is very difficult for prospective employee to get accustomed to the employers environment at that instance of time when the prospective employee is being interviewed.
Another reason is that since there are mostly standard methods available to perform a task, the prospective employee should be evaluated based on his understanding of those methods. The prospective employees knowledge of those methods which help him to carry out his day to day tasks at job can be tested by asking questions that scrutinize his knowledge of the tasks. For example, in software industry, if an employee is being interviewed for a position of software engineerin telecom domain, his knowledge can be scrutinized by questioning him about the methods that help him to perform his job and evaluating his responses for the question asked.
Perhaps the best reason for evaluating candidates based on question-and-answers is that the employer can retain the confidentiallity of the company matters such as data or data recording patterns which would be exposed to an outside person, who is just a prospective employee and still an outsider to the company, if he is to made to perform some of job's actual task. If the candidate doesnot fair well in his tasks for whatever reasons, there remains a threat to the company that its confidential data that was exposed to the employee could be leaked to its competitor when the same candidate approaches the other company for an interview.
In summary, while there are arguments to be made on both sides of the issue, it is clear that there are much advantages for the employers to evaluate a prospective employee based on question-and-answer interviews. Certainly the idea of question and answer methodology of interview outweighs the other idea of observing prospective employees while they actually perform on job tasks. Hence, traditional question and answer interviews helps in evaluating the job candidate more effectively.
