Advice required!!!

by GAMATO » Mon Dec 26, 2011 6:15 am
Hi,
I have been preparing for GMAT for 3 months now. Wrote my first mock test(POWERPREP) with a score of 640 ( Q 44 and V 35).

Have few questions.
1. Is PowerPrep score as reliable as GMATPrep score?
2. I am not unhappy with my Quants score as I made 4 silly mistakes out of 6 incorrect ones. Any suggestion on how to improve accuracy.
3. I am dissapointed with my verbal score as I have already gone through Powerscore CR Bible, Manhattan SC and Manhattan RC.I think I understand the concepts now but take a lot of time answering questions ( > 3 mins for CRs and > 2 mins for RCs and SCs). Not able to solve quickly altough I have practiced many questions by now. Can anyone help.

Is it possible to get my dream score of 720+ considering I am writing GMAT in mid March.

Thanks.

Many say powerprep is not as good as GMATPrep. Take a GMATPrep just to make sure where you stand.

Work on quants. Improving to 48/49 is easier and maintaining the verbal would get you 700. Work more on your strength in verbal or RC - if you are making more than 4 mistakes in it.

For quants - solve less, review more, make flash cards, work on inequalities, statistics, rate problems, co ordinate geometry and probability to reach 48 and much harder on these to reach 50+.

> 3 mins for CR is too bad, you should be able to solve it in < 2 mins. Get strong in basics. Don't overuse powerscore strategies. The more you employ rules/patterns for answer choices you will worsen in doing CRs. Change your approach for CR. Try Manhattan techniques or see Ron's videos - they are quite good.

> 2 mins for RC is good, try to practice in timed conditions. For SC you should be able to solve it in under a minute or 1.5 mins at the max. Its easier to improve. Practice lot and you already have the best book for SC, try to go through it multiple times. While solving SCs try to finish it quickly, but while reviewing try to find all the errors in each wrong answer choice - that way you will improve a lot in understanding the basics or post the questions in forums and you will get to know how different people employ different concepts to eliminate answer choices.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

Hi

You mentioned that u marked 6 incorrect Questions in Quant Section. What about verbal..

How many Questions were wrong in Verbal? Would be great if you can tell me the Question numbers where u had a wrong choice.

Hi Shekhar,
I made 13 mistakes in Verbal. Here is the break up.
SC - 2
CR - 3
RC - 8 ( I got 4 RCs, I had to guess an entire RC due to timing issues)

Thanks.

Thanks sam2304 for your suggestions. Will work on them.

Do you think I should write MGMT Free CAT instead of GMATPrep as it gives a detailed breakdown of the question types one gets wrong?

Also, Can you suggest some materials to practice Quant and SC questions?

Thanks.

GMATPrep itself will do. Don't rely too much on other test prep mocks. They aren't as close as GMATPrep in predicting the scores or in finding your strengths/weakness though they are good for practice.

Try to search for OG10 somewhere in the net. You have some 700 questions each in quant and verbal for practice. Moreover if you get used to MGMAT CATs your performance will improve. Buy any one MGMAT strategy guide and you get 6 full length tests. Reviewing OG problems and MGMAT mocks are enough for quants. Hope this helps :)

I don't recommend that students ever take the projected scores of practice exams too seriously, since all practice exams made by non-GMAC sources do not have their actual scoring algorithm, and even GMAC's own software is not updated constantly with the test (OG12 has a copyright of 2009!). GMAC's own stuff is a decent indicator, though, so I usually recommend that students save one test for a time closer to their real exam.
