Please Help Evaluate

by escallonia » Thu Jan 07, 2010 12:14 pm
I scored 690 on the GMAT about one year ago and I am trying to decide whether or not to retake the test. I'm particularly concerned with my low quant score, and hope to bring it up. I took the test last time after a Kaplan prep course, and can't afford to take the course again, so would be on my own this time, which makes me a bit nervous. I plan on applying to school to enter fall of 2011 and want to shoot for some of the top programs - ideally I'd like to be in Chicago: Kellogg, Booth or perhaps Michigan.
Please review the following information and let me know if you have any advice. Thank you in advance.

Several thoughts on your profile:

It will help you that you are a woman, so you have that going for you since b-schools need to boost their % women admits.

THe 690 is not anything I'd re-do, even considering your lower quant--you have academics to back it up and as you indicate, you risk coming in lower this time. I wouldn't even apologize for it. You are a typical poet profile--high GMAT score with big verbal score--may even differentiate you.

You mention wanting to get your PhD--if that's the case, I would recommend going ahead and doing that. It will take you 4-6 years and the MBA is considered a terminal degree--probably won't help you much when you try to go back for your PhD. Also by then you would likely have to retake the GMAT as the scores are only good for 5 years. You realize that being accepted into a PhD program generally means your tuition is free and you get a stipend to live on as a student, right? If you are serious about it, you can get a real jump start by going ahead down that road now rather than later.
