Does a campus visit help admin chances?

by djc225 » Thu Sep 13, 2012 7:40 am
Not sure that I can afford to the time and money for campus visits, though I'll absoultly fit it in if anyone can suggest how it might in my admit chances. Particularly for Columbia, Wharton and, Harvard. Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions?

Thanks,

Yes, no, maybe.

Yes, at a school like Tuck, it helps because people generally live far away, so a visit goes a long way. Plus they like to do almost all of their interviews on campus.

Maybe, at a school like Columbia that's particularly yield conscious.

No, at schools like Harvard and Wharton. They know that anyone who gets in is going to go, unless they also get into the other.

I'd say it's more important to attend local events and then if they offer an interview and you can swing it, go to campus to show you are really into them.

Hmmmm. I'm not so sure that it's as simple as "some schools care and others don't" although of course Harvard doesn't really care if you visit :)

The takeaways from visits don't actually help you get accepted in any direct manner, but can be very helpful for a) your research b) a motivation for your passion c) meetings with students, professors, admissions people d) unique detail for your essays and things like that.

What is the value of that? Hard to say on one hand, but certainly invaluable, even at Harvard where nobody cares that you visited (except maybe the most important person - you :) )
